A photographic walk through the birds of Kaka‘ako and urban Honolulu — roughly fifteen introduced species and five natives. Each chapter tells the story of a bird’s relationship with people and place rather than cataloguing its plumage: the cattle egret that followed the mowers, the pigeon asked to be looked at fairly, the saffron finch whose arrival you could watch, and a closing section of natives — the night heron, the kōlea, the koloa, and the white tern that nests downtown. The introduced birds mirror the immigrants who carried them; the natives mirror the place itself.
